The big pencil case

How adorable is this? A pencil case in the shape of a pencil...awesome!

This super-cute project was designed by the fabulously talented Miss Seleena at Dottie's Fake DIY - once you've made this, go check out her own creations - she's radular!

You will need:

1x 9x9 inch coloured felt (yellow or red look best but you can use any colour) Small piece of white felt Small piece of black felt 1x 7 inch zip (the same colour as the felt) Black embroidery thread Embroidery needle Sewing needle and thread (black and the same colour as your felt) A pair of scissors Pins

Step one

Cut out all the pieces you will need from the felt. From the coloured felt, cut two rectangular pieces that measure 9x19cm From the white felt cut two triangular pieces that measure 9x8.5x8.5cm And finally cut two smaller triangles from the black felt, measuring 2.5x2.5x2.5cm

Step two

Place the black triangles onto the end point of the white triangles and stitch on with black tread using running stitch.

Step three

Now place one end of the rectangular piece of felt onto the white triangle (with the black tipped end furthest away) overlapping by ½cm. Pin together. Using a thread the same colour as your rectangular piece of felt sew with a running stitch. Repeat with the other rectangular piece.

Step four

Next you need to put horizontal black lines on the pencil to make it look even more life-like! To do this you need your black embroidery thread and needle. Measure 3cm down from the top left corner. This is where your first straight line will start. Using a running stitch, sew a straight line until you reach the white pencil part. Now instead of finishing off with a knot, you need to stitch all the way back, filling in the gaps to make a solid stitched line. Measure 3cm down from the line you just stitched and stitch another line. Repeat on the other pencil piece.

Step five

To attach the zip, first lay on of your pencils onto the zip (with the white end pointing right). Pin the zip in place and sew on using a running stitch. Place the other pencil on the other side of the zip and pin and stitch as before.

Step six

Now using a thread the same colour as you felt pencil, stitch all around the pencil using a blanket stitch. Start 1 ½cm in from the top left corner and there you have it, one super ace felt giant pencil pencil case! Go and show it off to all your friends - you’ll be too cool for school!

How to do running stitch

This is the easiest stitch of all. Start by threading your needle with thread, tie a knot at the other end of the thread. Simply sew in and out of the fabric making all stitches even and equal in length. To finish off, knot the thread by passing the needle through the last stitch you’ve done and through the loop you created by doing this, repeat to make it secure!

How to do blanket stitch

Bring the needle and thread up through the fabric, then down through the fabric (about ½ cm away), leaving a loop. Bring the needle up through the loop, pull gently to tighten and put the needle down through the fabric about ½ cm away. Repeat until finished.
